O.D.T. was started in the last quarter of 2001, and brings thirty years of experience in the design, test and repair on all of Datum’s old time code instruments. The company was started after new management of Datum’s Timing Test & Measurement Division decided to discontinue service on all instruments that had been out of production for ten years or more. This decision reversed a long-standing policy that had been set by Datum’s founder when the company began operations in 1968. That policy had promised best-effort service on all of the company’s instruments, regardless of age, for as long as parts were available.

The driving desire behind O.D.T. was to provide continuing service to all of Datum’s long-term customers for whom the company had designed and built instruments which were customized to their specific requirements for use as the timing synchronization and distribution heart of much larger, much more expensive data acquisition systems. It did not seem fair for those customers to essentially be told to “ ’go fly a kite’ unless you’re willing and able to come up with a new budget for replacements”. This is especially true when, in many cases, this would require the replacement of one custom-built instrument with one or more “off the shelf” instruments, often necessitating extensive and expensive changes to their existing system.
